What comes to mind when I start to write
is not mine, nor from some other time,
nothing stolen, not something nuanced,
spun with silk, or grown from seed,
but visions of a paler sky, a less steely gray
than caps late winter’s fallow fields.

Yesterday I saw robins. Today, crocus.
There is promise now to keep, he wrote.
